Mental Health & Wellness: Removing the Financial Barriers to Care

At the Larry Pickett Foundation, we believe that the cost of professional counseling should never be a secondary trauma. While the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurance companies to cover mental health services at the same level as physical care, high deductibles and out-of-pocket costs often prevent heroes and survivors from accessing the help they deserve.

Our mission is to provide the immediate financial bridge to cover deductibles and session costs, ensuring your focus remains on restoration, not the balance of your bank account.

Navigating the Cost of Recovery

Even with insurance, the financial path to mental wellness can be complex. We utilize our Foundation-Led GoFundMe Pro campaigns to bridge the gaps created by modern insurance structures:

  • Meeting the Deductible: Many plans require a significant out-of-pocket spend before coverage kicks in. We provide the funds to satisfy these deductibles immediately so therapy can begin without delay.

  • Covering Co-Pays: The recurring cost of weekly trauma-informed sessions can create a “financial spiral.” We use community-raised funds to cover these ongoing costs.

  • Fulfilling Medical Necessity: Insurance typically requires a formal diagnosis (such as PTSD, Acute Stress Disorder, or Adjustment Disorder) and may require prior approval or a referral from a primary care doctor. Once your care is established, we provide the capital to fund it.

The Foundation Advantage: Professional & Tax-Deductible

When a community rallies to support a hero’s mental health, doing so through the Larry Pickett Foundation provides a level of professional oversight and financial benefit that personal fundraisers cannot match:

  • 100% Tax-Deductible: Every dollar donated by friends, family, and employers is 501(c)(3) tax-deductible, encouraging larger contributions to meet high-cost deductibles.

  • Corporate Matching: Our status as a registered nonprofit allows employers to match donations, often doubling the funds available for a survivor’s care.

  • Direct Financial Support: We use the funds raised to pay for your care directly or to reimburse verified medical expenses, ensuring the administrative burden is taken off the survivor’s shoulders.

The Full-Circle Mission

Restoring the mental health of our heroes and survivors is an investment in our entire community. When we provide the financial runway for a first responder or survivor to heal, we are ensuring they can return to their lives and their duties with strength and clarity.

Any surplus funds from these campaigns are reinvested back into the hero’s local district to procure life-saving equipment, ensuring that the legacy of one rescue provides the tools for the next.
